What Is Required to Rent a Car?
Confidentiality
All data requested by the car rental company from the customer are recorded solely for use in the rental process. Personal data cannot be used for any purposes other than those related to the rental.
Driver Age
Car rental companies typically require the renter to be at least 21 years old due to insurance conditions. The age limit is usually set at 25 for mid-range and luxury vehicles and 28 for large vehicles.
Duration of License
Although car rental conditions may vary between companies, it is generally required for the driver to have held a license for at least 2 years for mid-range and luxury vehicles, and 3 years or more for high-end and large vehicles.
Additional Driver
Rental vehicles must be used only by the driver registered in the rental agreement. If a different driver will use the vehicle, it is a condition of the rental to inform the rental company of this person.
Car Rental Periods
The minimum car rental period is 1 day. For rentals shorter than one day, the fee for one day is charged according to the car rental terms.
Kilometer Limit
A mileage limit is set for each rented vehicle. This condition, which applies to all vehicles except those rented with unlimited mileage, accrues a fee to the customer if the mileage limit is exceeded, as specified by the rental company.
Payment Methods
Car rental companies generally require the rental fee to be paid partially or fully by credit card, money order, or cash. If partial payment is accepted, the remaining amount is due upon vehicle return.
Deposit / Provision
Rental companies may require a certain amount to be authorized on the customer’s credit card to cover potential costs such as traffic fines, missing fuel, damages not covered by insurance, or cleaning expenses arising from smoking. During this process, no amount is charged to the card; it is merely blocked.
Insurance
All rented vehicles are insured under a rent-a-car insurance policy. To keep the insurance valid, the driver must not use alcohol or drugs, comply with legal speed limits, ensure the vehicle is used only by those registered in the contract, adhere to load limits, and avoid use outside of highways. The insurance claim must be accompanied by an alcohol and drug report if an accident occurs and submitted to the rental company within 48 hours.
Flight Information
If the rented vehicle is picked up at the airport, the renter must provide flight information to the car rental company. The rental company’s delivery responsibilities should be clearly understood, and necessary information should be provided in a timely manner.
Delivery and Returns
Vehicles can be delivered and returned from specified addresses or picked up and dropped off at locations according to the company’s policies.
Fuel
Rental companies typically offer two types of fuel conditions: “full-to-empty” or “empty-to-full.” The rental company should inform the customer of these conditions.
Bridge and Highway Crossings
Rental companies equip each vehicle with automatic toll systems. The charges incurred at toll booths are collected from the customer at the time of vehicle return.
Submission of the Vehicle as Brand/Series/Model or Similar
If the specific vehicle requested by the customer is unavailable due to late return, damage, or other issues, alternatives such as a different vehicle or a higher-class vehicle may be provided based on company policies and rental conditions.
Going Abroad
Vehicles rented in Turkey cannot be taken abroad, as specified in the car rental conditions.
Cancellation and Change Procedures
Car rental companies have varying policies for cancellations. Some may offer refunds, while others retain the fee for future rentals. For changes, if there is a difference in vehicle class, the additional fee may be charged; otherwise, changes are usually made free of charge.
